How to write heading tags
Back Posted on 11 Jan 2014
Heading tags are used to create titles, headings and sub headings in your document. They perform two purposes; to identify specific areas of content to a user and indicate to search engines what each area of content is about.
Heading tags should be used should be as follows.
- h1 tag - Title of the page summarising the overall content
- h2 tag - Sub titles, outlining the major sections
- h3 tag - Section titles, identifying more specific content
- h4 tag - Sub-section titles, describing the most detailed level of content
Things to be aware of
The h1 tag is important in terms of search engines. Using your main target keyword once in the h1 tag can increase your chance of ranking for that term.
Things to avoid
H1 should be used only once per page. You should never select a particular heading tag because the style [colour/size] suits. Either use the correct heading tag for the part of the document you are working on or contact someone to have the style changed for you.
A typical page on a website might be structured as follows:
h1 Title
Introductory paragraph
h2 Subtitle
h3 Section title
Section paragraphs
h4 Sub section title
Sub section paragraphs
h3 Section title
Section paragraphs
